CONNEMARA HAS LONG BEEN as one of the most magnificient and unspoilt landscapes of Europe, and in a lovely corner of it, between the mountains and the sea, nestled at the foot of Derradda Hill, is an eightenth century sporting lodge, now a small family run guest-house The Anglers Return.
Peace, space, log-fires and a great variety of books create an atmosphere in which guests can truly relax, and feel both cared-for and sheltered in this charming house of timeless elegence and comfort.

There is a magic here that only those who sit in the secluded back yard can know, with its centurian trees, stone walls, tumbling flowers and well fed fowl. The three acres of rambling natural gardens surrounding the house, especially beautiful in May and early June, welcome one to paint, or read or wander or just sip afternoon tea.

Roundstone, a lively picturesque fishing village, with many good restaurants, pubs and craft shops, is only 7 minutes away, south-west along the coast road. (In June it hosts the Roundstone Arts Week, a celebration of local artists, musicians and writers.)

Fishing

As indicated on the map, The Anglers Return Fishery comprises several intercommunicating lakes draining into the Owenmore (Ballinahinch) River, as well as a chain of brown trout lakes. Game and coarse fishing can be arranged locally, or on Lough Corrib; Sea-fishing opportunities are plentiful from the local harbours at Roundstone, Clifden and Renvyle, and boats depart daily from Cleggan to the beautiful island of Inishbofin.

Other Activities

Connemara is an artists and hill-walkers paradise. The 12 Bens and Maam Turk mountains lie just a little north east of The Anglers Return
with easy access to walkers and climbers. (Maps are provided, or excellent guided walks can be arranged)

A Championship Golf Links Course is 12 miles away at Ballyconneely, also a scenic 18 hole Pitch and Putt Course at Recess. All are welcome.

All Pony Trekking Centres in the area offer riding on the famous Connemara Pony, on mountain or beach treks. Bicycle hire is a half kilometre away at the Toombeola Service Station. It is easy to cycle to one of the many beautiful sandy beaches; Gorteen beach now has a windsurfing school, and Dogs Bay with its lovely white sand consisting soley of tiny shells of FORAMINIFERA, is one of the most special beaches in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Anglers Return has five bright comfortable bedrooms for guests, with lovely views over lake and gardens. Food is home produced and delicious. (If the cockerel awakens you in the morning, feel free to collect you own egg for breakfast!) An evening meal is available if prior notice is given, or dinner can be booked at one of the many excellent local sea-food restaurants.
